Pleiades Group Map A
Pleiades Group Map A is a loose mind mapping of the seven projects which includes Dulle Griet. Key components of the seven project plan are presented in white or black paint marker over a reflective sheet of acrylic. On the back side of the acrylic is printed an image from Dulle Griet, the first project of the group. Below the image, resting on an open artist's paint box are an Arduino, breadboard with proximity sensor, battery power and a speaker which is connected to a contact microphone placed behind the image. When a viewer approaches to read the text, the electronics send power to a motor behind that image. The motor increases speed as the viewer moves closer. The entire image shakes making the text illegible because of the motion. The speaker projects the sound of the motor in increasingly shrill tones. The difficulty of reading from a distance is replaced by that of the vibrating image and the distracting sound.
The mechanical workings of this piece illustrate one of the main themes of Dulle Griet - Even when entirely exposed, description and interpretation fail to encapsulate and elucidate art which is born of and transmitted by intuition. |
